Welcome to the Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) episode number 206! This time around we are back with Friend of the Show, Founder of the Upper Chesapeake Sailing Group on Facebook, and progenitor of the Boaters Boat Show, the third edition being held in Baltimore on the weekend of September 11th, 2026.
He is soon to be retired, and I wanted to chat with him again on the podcast about the process of buying a boat when you weren’t really in the market to do so. We originally had him on back in 2018 when he started the Facebook group, and in 2023 he hired me at the HVAC company he works for. Since then we have spent hours talking about sailing, going sailing, meeting up on the bay, at boat shows, and other events.
He wasn’t really in the market to buy a boat, but he agreed to help a fellow BYC member who lost her husband sell her Hunter 38. It was in prime shape and in the process of helping, he got interested in the possibility of purchasing the boat. He did his due diligence by looking at some other boats in the area for sale, but at the end of the day, the owner was willing to make some compromises in the deal, and after consulting with his family and financial advisors, Roping in Lizzy Swan to help with the paperwork, and then going through the process of selling their existing Catalina 30.
We also chat about the upcoming third edition of the Boaters Boat Show, being held the weekend of September 11th in Baltimore at Anchorage Marina. I plan on attending by car, but I know many folks who will be there in person showing off their boats.
At the end of the episode we hear from Jack and Lily, a Pa based duo who played at our Hances Point Yacht Club party a few weeks back. They play “Walking after Midnight” by Patsy Cline.
