Annapolis Sailing School Managing Director John Cosby with MD Gov. Hogan.

Welcome to episode 110 of The Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) featuring our chat with guest John Cosby, Managing Director of the Annapolis Sailing School. The school is located off of Back Creek in Annapolis and is the original Adult Recreational Sailing School in the Country. Starting in 1959 as a boat rental outiftter, founder Jerry Wood had the Rainbow 24 designed by Sparkman and Stephens specifically for the school, and those boats are still used today! Three main schools make up the training, starting out with Kidship, a 10 week summer camp for kids 5 to 15, ASA certification classes for Keelboats ranging from the Rainbow 24 to Beneteau 37’s, and Specialized classes in Navigation and Powerboating, as well as everything customizable in between. They’ve got a great property surrounded on three sides with water, with event potential for all your event planning and is easy to find, turn onto Edgewood Road off of Bay Ridge Rd and just keep going. I was also fortunate enough to catch a screening of the new sailing documentary Maiden, the story of the first all female race crew in the 1989 edition of the Whitbread Around the World Race, which eventually became the Volvo Ocean Race, and now just The Ocean Race. Tracey Edwards, MBE was the driving force behind the formation of the team and its successful around the world campaign. It is an inspiring tale of how great determination, skill, and a bit of good luck can change the world.
Also please check out The 2nd Annual Underground Railroad Freedom Regatta Weekend over in Cambridge, MD August 2nd and 3rd. We spoke to Marcus Asante last year when they were putting together the first edition of the Regatta. They bring together about 20 local kids, get them involved in boat work and activities and then have a good old fashioned Sailboat Race and Regatta, complete with awards ceremony.
